Jargon

Tuesday, February 17, 2009
I've learned a new jargon today:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis

Sounds fancy?

What it actually means is chronic fatigue syndrome.
myalgic = muscles pain
encephalo = brain
myelitis = inflammation

Presenting symptoms of myalgic encehalomyelitis are fatigue, muscle pain and mental fogginess. Symptoms can not be explained by other conditions such as depression and malignancy. In other words, causes unknown. Could be a combination of different factors.

Why do we need such hard-to-spell word to describe something that's not-so-hard to understand? O___o

22nd Birthday

Monday, February 16, 2009
Ok. This is so different. I actually missed one of our traditional 'not so surprise' midnight surprise party. I was expecting a quiet birthday, maybe treating myself with something hot, spicy and soupy. Friends from Dunedin are irreplaceable. What we did for every birthdays are so...us! Even so, I was really blessed to have some of my friends from class celebrating my birthday. Yoomi baked me a really nice vegan chocolate cake. Later in the evening, we went to this famous dessert place, Strawberry Fare, for their legendary pricey dessert. This is the first time I had tiramisu. Perfecto! Nicely soaked with rum and mocha. So that's how I celebrated my 22nd birthday.

Where is the Malaysian Embassy?

Wednesday, February 11, 2009
I am extremely tired today. Not really from school. But from the ridiculous amount of walking UPHILL to find The High Commission of Malaysia. I choose to walk because I am not familiar with Brooklyn and I don't want to take a bus in case I ended up in nowhere. But the path I took from Newtown to Brooklyn seems to be in the middle of nowhere. The winding rocky road cut through an endless piece of, I believe, thousand years old bushes with ancient trees. I checked the map for the ump tenth time even though I was 100% positive I was on the right path. Surely, such an important government building shouldn't be built in the middle of a 'forest'? After what seems like eons, I finally saw a few houses! Man had I never been so relieved to encounter cilivisation once again. Anyway, the High Commission of Malaysia is walled off by massive iron gate. I even need to press a button to explain my arrival to be let in through the automatic iron gate. If I was not here for my passport renewal form, I could easily imagine myself in a top secret military building.

It has been about 3 weeks now since I arrived in Newtown. I understand why this suburb is classified as the 'dodgy area'. There are quite a few people with mental illness hanging around here. I felt very sorry for them. Some people might be scared of them, which is fair enough. But somehow I felt that they deserve a better life. Nobody wants to be sick, especially getting sick at your most vital organ...the BRAIN. When the brain is down, it is like loosing your whole self. An empty soul living in an umkempt shell which has a radioactive sign that keeps people away.

Anyway, *finger cross* hope my visa goes well. Ken-tucky. Tennes-see.

Naming my blog

Tuesday, February 10, 2009
Hah, you might be wondering what happened to 'The Pursuit of Happiness'?

It's not that I am getting sick of the title already. I still love that movie. 'Stealing' such a cool (I think) title for my blog has a downside. If you type 'The Pursuit of Happyness' on Google, my blog would be easily accessible. Hence, views from random people from random places. Not that there's anything interesting in my blog, but it would be really embarassing if that random viewer happened to be my future boss!

So, I tried to think of a super cool title for my bloggie, something original. Man, it is a hard task. I am so not imiginative. Right now, I have to fulfill the call of my empty tummy, so the random symbols that will be the temporary name of my blog will do until I come up with a super cool name. It does have meaning though, if you could interpret it O_o.

Welly, here I come!

Thursday, February 5, 2009
WOW!!!

It has been a looong while!
There are so many things to blog about that I don't know where to start.
Ok, I'll just start at the day I arrived in Wellington. Ray Ray, you are right! Welly is scorching hot. I was half barbequed while trying to complete my first quest---bed hunting, on foot! It was surprisingly less troblesome than I'd expected. All the bedding stores are concentrated at one single area, Thorndorn Quay. Hunting for 'affordable' brand new bed, a.k.a the cheapest from the cheapest store require a bit of leaving behind your 'face' at the door. I have to 'fake' being interested while the enthusiastic salesmen/women tried to talk me through all their specials at the moment, and by that I mean special from $1000 to $700! Eventually, I came across the cheapest single bed plus spring mattress and bought a better-than-warehouse foam mattress as well *ahem* especially for GUESTS.

Quest number two is filling up the empty kitchen with pots and kitchen utensils. I went nuts on Briscoes because it was having a 30% to 60% summer sale. It took me three trips to fill up my kitchen satisfactorily *no more mr canai aka faithful driver friend so hence the three trips*.

Quest number three is furniture hunting. This took quite a while because I was trying to look for the cheapest deal (again) plus delivery. The warehouse has the cheapest deal so far but they charge $50 dollars for delivery -__-''. But luckily, one of my friend who has a CAR wanted to get some furniture from the warehouse as well, so I hooked along happily.

Just as I thought I'm done with digging an ever growing hole in my bank, my flatmate erm...thought it was a good idea that I get a matching size TV for her big TV cabinet in the lounge. After a few days of intense trademe-ing, I bought a 29' Sony Trinitron. I was quite satisfied with the buy because it is definitely better and the screen is wider than the TV at my Malaysian home with LESS cash involved.

Quest number four, find myself a church. I've always wanted to attend the legendary ARISE, planted by planet shakers. But somehow I missed their service twice. I got lost the first time and I was invited to Elim the second time. Maybe this Sunday then.

The hardest and most important quest is to prepare myself for my clinical years. I was terrified. A lot of people asked me if I was excited but really, after sitting through the briefing about the OSCE exams and how you have to ask around to be TAUGHT instead of having a team ready to spoon feed you scared me. I am shy and inert *yeah right* and flattering is not particularly my talent. I always had problem with teachers at school but now my education line depends on the grace and mercy of my seniors. The difference here is teachers and tutors get paid for their job, but TIs, housesurgeons, registrars and nurses don't get paid for teaching newbies. It is entirely voluntary on top of their busy schedules. But I guess that is how I would learn to build good relationships with my future colleagues and boss.

Last but not least, life is DULL without YOU guys!
